PA 2011
All newly recruited PA’s (Personal Assistants) are required to attend our ‘Induction Course’, which is held over 5 days at our Head Office in Kendal.
The course will enable the new recruits to develop their knowledge and skills, enabling them to provide comprehensive and appropriate assistance under direction from a client who has a spinal cord injury.
We will cover the cost of both the accommodation and the course, but we require you to be available to work for a period of at least 3 months, if you leave before this we would seek reimbursement of part/full course costs.
We invite a client to come to the course; this enables the PA’s to ask any questions of either the client or their PA. This is a valuable experience that past PA’s have identified as being one of the highlights of the week.
During the week we usually have a social evening when the PA’s and staff can enjoy a meal together and get to know each other!
The course content is comprehensive and designed to meet the Skills for Care ‘Common Induction Standards’ and also the specific needs of our clients with spinal cord injuries.
The candidates will be assessed during the course, by completing practical tasks e.g. moving and handling, first aid etc and also their knowledge and understanding through participation in discussions and the completing of written questions.
Spinal Homecare are an approved centre and work with NCFE (awarding body) to support our PA's to continue their professional development. After working for us for 6 months our PA's have the option to start studying for the Diploma in Health and Social Care (NVQ replacement).
The areas that the course covers are:What is a spinal cord injuryPrinciple needs of the individual, Human Rights, Disability Discrimination ActMoving and HandlingMedication ManagementAnatomy and care of the bowel and bladderPrevention and management of pressure soresFirst AidAbuse AwarenessAutonomic DysreflexiaDriving Assessment, with an external driving instructor
